The “Redeem Team” Ready To Take On World

The USA Mens Basketball Olympic Team. Kobe Bryant, LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, Jason Kidd and about 7 other NBA all stars are ready to recover from their “bronze bust” in ’04 to win the gold, anything short will be a failure.

“I’ve been ready for a new Olympic experience for four years now,” said Miami Heat guard Dwyane Wade, who was part of the so-called “bronze bust” experience of Athens in 2004.

It has been 8 long years since the USA mens basketball team last wong a gold medal which is why this collection — hand-picked by USA Basketball managing director Jerry Colangelo and honed by coach Mike Krzyzewski — has come to be known as the “Redeem Team.”

Wade, LeBron James, ‘Melo Anthony and Carlos Boozer were members of the 2004 team that lost three times in the Olympic tournament and became infamous for their infighting and disharmony.

Tim Duncan battled with the referees and vowed never to return to the Olympics. Head coach Larry Brown dueled with point guard Stephon Marbury and tried to get him booted off the team.

They were all perceived as haughty and arrogant. So when the Americans finally wound up in third place, they were treated with scorn.

“What we’re trying to now is to bring back the honor and respect to USA Basketball and to change the perception of how some may view us,” said Boozer, the Utah Jazz forward. “We’re on a mission. If they people view us in a negative way, we want to make it a positive way.”

“The Dream was special,” Wade said. “But the Dream Team didn’t play the competiton that we’re going to be playing. This game of basketball has caught up. There are going to be games where we’re going to win by 10, win by 12, win by 1, maybe win by 38. Who knows? At the end of the day, all they’re going to remember is if you win.

“If we win the gold medal and they say, ‘The USA won, but they only won by one.’ I don’t care. We’ll take it.”

And consider it redemption.
